The decision aid “Fallopian tube removal” was created by women and medical professionals to support them in making a well-informed decision: whether or not to remove the Fallopian tubes during scheduled abdominal surgery or sterilisation.
The Fallopian tube removal decision aid is for women who:
- are due to undergo abdominal surgery – such as the removal of the womb – and who do not want to have children (anymore); or
- are due to undergo a sterilisation.
Medical content
The medical content in the decision aid is based on the latest scientific knowledge and the Dutch guidelines, as drafted by the NVOG. Patient associations “Stichting Olijf” and “Bekkenbodem4all” were closely involved in the creation of this content.

Development, research and implementation
The decision aid has been approved by the Netherlands Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (NVOG) and the patients’ associations “Stichting Olijf” and “Bekkenbodem4all”. The decision aid has been awarded the “Gewone Taal” label by the Stichting Makkelijk Lezen (certifies that the text is easy to comprehend).
A national, multi-disciplinary steering committee consisting of gynaecologists and patients’ representatives was established for the development of this decision aid. This working party is responsible for the medical content.
In addition, a panel of gynaecologists and patients (representatives) participated in the needs and user studies for this decision aid.
The Fallopian tube removal decision aid is an initiative by the Radboudumc and Catharina Hospital.
