Fallopian tubes removed?

What are the risks?

The Fallopian tubes are located close to the ovaries. Removing the Fallopian tubes may result in reduced blood flow to the ovaries. This can cause early menopause.

Menopause symptoms – such as mood swings and hot flashes – will start at an earlier age and you may be at a slightly increased risk of osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.

The effects of removing the Fallopian tubes are being studied in detail. At the moment, it appears that menopause symptoms start a maximum of 2 years sooner.

If you have surgery in another area of the abdomen (for example, to remove the gallbladder), removing the Fallopian tubes may result in one or more additional scars on your abdomen, each about 1 to 2 centimeters in size. This is because an extra opening in the abdomen is needed to reach the Fallopian tubes. This may also slightly increase the risk of complications. While there has been done little research on this, we believe the risk is small. Removing the Fallopian tubes is also unlikely to lead to a longer recovery after surgery.
